Bugis Waterpark Adventure opened in Indonesia!

Bugis Waterpark Adventure, Indonesia’s newest waterpark for heart-pounding water rides, cute creepy-crawlies and a serene, natural setting opened on May 27th. The park in Perumahan Bukit Baruga, Antang, Makassar, in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, has a serene theme designed to replicate the rural areas of the region.

Recognizing the Region’s Culture
Bugis Waterpark Adventure opened on May 27, attracting thousands to its 7 hectares (~7 acres). After years of planning and construction by Pt. Baruga Asrinusa Development, Kalla Group (Sulawesi Selatan, Indonesia), in collaboration with Polin Waterparks and Pool Systems (Istanbul, Turkey), and Polin’s Agent in Indonesia Hardjonosigit; the site is now one of the largest waterparks ever built in Indonesia.

While the park’s developers and designers were intent on creating a world-class waterpark, they also wanted to maintain the region’s traditional cultures and values. Thus, not only does the overall park reflect that heritage but so do the rides’ names and the verbiage used to denote its various zones. Specifically, those zones are:

  • Allabuang (harbor or port)
  • Kampong Rilau (fishing village)
  • Goa Bartu Kalibampa (butterfly caves).

Adwin Pratama, Marketing and Advertising Manager for Bugis, says they wanted to offer an attraction that was entertaining but also educational. “We wanted the park to reflect the values and philosophy of the area—to give children and their families an opportunity to learn more about the culture and language of the Bugis.”

Historically, the Bugis are an Austronesian ethnic group in South Sulawesi. Although many Bugis live in port cities like Makassar, most traditionally have been farmers who grow rice on the wet, lowland plains or who work as traders, hunters, craftsmen or fishermen. Many outside the bigger cities live in stilted houses up to 9 feet or more off the ground. During the growing season, some family members live in small huts located in the fields.

To maintain the historical ties to the Bugis’s legacy, the park has christened its 10 attractions with appropriate Bugis-language monikers. For example, the Malippuno, a rafting slide, means “dizzying” based on the twisting, turning path that riders experience.

Other attractions at the park include:

  • Pipa Wae (Polin’s Aquatube, a fast body slide that is the longest in Indonesia at 150 meters or 492 feet)
  • Matanre (Polin’s Free Fall speed slide)
  • Tappasorong (Polin’s Multi Slide with side-by-side lanes and mat-based racing)
  • Mattulili (a body slide)
  • Mapettang (Polin’s Black Hole, an enclosed slide employing inner tubes)
  • Wae Massolo (a leisure river)
  • Kollang Ana’Ana (a children’s pool)
  • Kollang Piji’ (a whirl pool)
  • Kollang To’Lompo (a main pool)

Oz Ikiz from Polin Sales Team, defined the waterpark experience at Bugis as one that local residents will appreciate, as well as visitors to the region. “The park takes guests back to a simpler time where they can relax and forget about the rush of the modern world,” he says.
